Mariska's Jewelry Designs Grand Opening Sale: February Birthstone Amethyst

Grand Opening Continues, and Amethyst Birthstone Gem

Well if you haven't noticed, we are at the beginning of our February Grand Opening at Mariska's Jewelry Designs!  We've shared some handy tips on our February Blog Posts.  Today we want to focus on the well known birthstone for February: Amethyst Gemstone.

Everyone always associates Amethyst with the color purple, however, Amethyst can come in many colors...more on that later.  I think you might agree, that when I say Amethyst, you do associate it with a rich purple.  And the deeper, darker, almost palatable purple, the more most of us love that stone.

In researching Amethyst, I was amazed at it's reported healing properties. In fact, at a seminar I went to late last year, I met a gentleman who claims he used to always have muscle cramps in his leg until he put Amethyst gemstones on his leg, held with Ace wraps? Sounds legit.

Gemstone therapists say that the amethyst has a sobering and cleansing effect. Amethyst has also been said to quell excessive stomach acid and, according to Hildegard von Bingen, served to combat insect bites and beautify the skin.

Throughout history amethyst has been used to guard against drunkenness and is thought to be helpful in overcoming addiction. It has been used for hearing disorders, insomnia, headaches and other pain. Some sources suggest it is used to stabilize mental disorders.

Worn to make the wearer gentle and amiable. Amethyst powers include: dreams, healing, peace, love, spiritual upliftment, courage,  psychism, protection against thieves, and happiness.

A very controversial belief is that stones that are heat treated to reach a more intense color, or a different color makes the stone less valuable. What I've seen is that almost any colored stone in jewelry made over the last 10-20 years has been heat treated, and we've never had so many choices in colors since they've been heat treated gemstones.  It's a very confusing issue, one thing is clear, heat treating is permanent, so if you like the color, enjoy!  I did read in one article that Amethyst has a tendency to fade, however, I've read from other authorities that is does not fade?  Go figure.  My best advice, if you like the color, don't wear it in the bright sunlight.
